Privacy Policy

Rink Reels is a video breakdown tool for hockey coaches. This policy explains what happens to your data. The short version: your game tape stays on your device, we do not run analytics or advertising of any kind — and the specific things that do leave your device, when you sign in or share a clip, are listed below.

The short version

• Your game tape never leaves your device. We do not upload, copy or transmit the video file you open.
• A clip you choose to share is different. Sharing cuts a short clip out of that tape and uploads that clip to our storage, so the people you send the link to can watch it. Nothing is uploaded until you tap Share.
• Your tags, drawings and walkthrough recordings are stored locally on the device you made them on.
• If you use a team, your roster is uploaded — including player names and any parent email addresses you enter. See Players and minors.
• There is no third-party analytics or advertising in this app. No tracking SDK, no ad network, no profiling.

What stays on your device

All of the following is stored in your device's local app storage and is not sent to us or anyone else:

• Game video. Rink Reels reads the file you choose and plays it. The tape itself is never copied off the device. (A short clip you explicitly choose to share is uploaded — see Signing in and sharing below.)
• Tags, moments and stoppages you create.
• Telestrations — the arrows, rings and boxes you draw.
• Walkthrough recordings, including your voice and camera, when you record one.
• Rosters — player names and numbers you enter (see Players and minors below).
• Automatic stoppage detection. Finding the breaks in play analyses the tape's audio, and that analysis runs entirely on your device. Your game audio is never uploaded, streamed, or sent anywhere for processing.
• In-app usage counters. We record when a paywall was shown and whether a purchase was started, so we can tell which features people want. These counts are kept in local storage on your device and are never transmitted. There is no analytics service behind them.

If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it, and we have no copy of it.

That is true of everything in the list above. It is not true of a clip you have shared, or of a roster attached to a team — those are on our servers, and deleting the app does not remove them. See Signing in and sharing.

Permissions we ask for, and why

You can decline any of these. Declining the camera or microphone means you cannot record a walkthrough with them; nothing else is affected.

Purchases

Where you buy decides who takes the payment, and that changes who receives what. There are two rails, and this policy used to describe only the first.

On iPad, through the App Store

The purchase is handled by Apple. We never see or receive your payment details, card number, or billing address.

We use RevenueCat to tell the app whether a purchase is active. RevenueCat receives information about the purchase and basic device information such as your platform and app version.

It is linked to your account. Before you sign in, RevenueCat sees only a randomly generated identifier. Once you sign in, we tell RevenueCat your Rink Reels account id, so that a subscription you bought on one device is recognised on the next one. That id is the same identifier our own database uses, so your purchase record and your account are connected — not by your name or your email address, but they are connected. An earlier version of this policy said they were not, and that was wrong.

RevenueCat acts as our service provider for this purpose. Their privacy policy is at revenuecat.com/privacy.

On Mac or Windows, through rinkreels.com

The purchase goes through Stripe Checkout, and we are the merchant — we bill you, Apple is not involved. Stripe acts as our payment processor.

• Stripe receives your email address, the card details you enter, and the billing address Stripe asks for at checkout. The card details go directly to Stripe: they are entered on Stripe's own page, and we never see, receive or store a card number.
• We pass Stripe your email address to start the checkout, so the receipt and the subscription reach you.
• Automated tax. Stripe calculates sales tax or VAT from the address and location information it collects at checkout. That determination is Stripe's, using data Stripe holds.
• What we store afterwards is one identifier. When a purchase completes, Stripe gives us a customer id and we save it against your account so the billing page can find your subscription later. We do not store your card, your billing address, or anything else about the payment.

Either way

If you never make a purchase, no purchase data is created or transmitted.

Subscriptions bought on one rail are recognised on the other, because both are attached to the Rink Reels account you were signed in as. That is the whole reason the account exists.

Players and minors

Rink Reels is a tool for coaches, and the rosters you enter will often contain the names and jersey numbers of young players, and sometimes a parent's email address.

Where that information goes depends on whether the roster belongs to a team.

• A roster you keep only on this device stays on this device. We never receive it, and it is used only to label your own clips.
• A roster attached to a team is uploaded to our database. That includes each player's name, jersey number, position, line and pairing, and any email address you entered for them. It is stored so the roster follows you to your other devices and so other coaches on that team can see it, and so that a clip can be sent to a family by name.

A team is created when you make or join one — and also the first time you share a clip, which creates a personal team to own that clip. So if you have ever shared, assume your roster has been uploaded.

We do not use this information for anything other than running those features. It is never sold, never shared with advertisers, and never used to build a profile.

Rink Reels is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 directly from them. The player details in a roster are entered by an adult coach about their own team. Because of that, please follow your league's or association's own rules about recording and identifying young players, about collecting parents' contact details, and about who you share clips with — and only enter a family's email address if you have their agreement to contact them that way.

To remove a player's details from our database, delete them from the roster, or delete the team.

What we do not do

• We do not use third-party analytics, attribution, or crash-reporting services.
• We do not show advertising, and we do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers.
• We do not build a profile of you, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

Note what is not on that list any more. Rink Reels used to run without an account, and an earlier version of this policy said so. It no longer does: the app asks you to sign in before you can use it, so that a plan, a redeem code or a shared clip always has an owner. Your video and your tags still stay on your device — that part has not changed — but the account itself is no longer optional.

Signing in and sharing

Everything above stays on your device. This section and Purchases above are between them the exhaustive list of what does not. Signing in is required before you can use the app; sharing is entirely your choice, and nothing is uploaded until you tap Share.

When you create an account, we store the email address you sign in with, and a display name if you give us one. Sign-in is handled by Supabase, which acts as our service provider for authentication and database hosting.

When you share a clip, the following is uploaded:

• The clip itself — a short cut of your tape, encoded on your device and uploaded to our storage at Cloudflare R2. Not the whole game; only the clip you shared.
• If you share a walkthrough, that clip also contains your voice and, if you turned the camera on, your picture.
• A title for the clip, generated from the tag.
• The share link itself — a random token, its expiry date, and a count of how many times it has been opened. If you send the clip to named players, we also store who it was sent to and whether each of them opened it.

Anyone who has the link can watch the clip until the link expires or you revoke it. They can also save a copy — that is true of any video anyone can play, and we cannot prevent it. Treat a share link as you would treat sending the video file itself, and only send it to people the families have agreed to.

By default a link expires 30 days after it is created. You can revoke a link at any time from the app, which stops it opening.

An uploaded clip is deleted automatically 90 days after you upload it. A job runs every day and removes clips that have passed that point — the video file itself is deleted from storage, and our record of it goes with it. You do not have to do anything.

Two things worth separating, because they are easy to confuse:

• The link expiring (30 days by default) stops the link opening. The clip is still in storage until its own 90 days are up.
• Revoking a link stops it opening immediately. It also does not delete the clip early — it closes the way in, and the file goes at the 90-day mark like any other.

To have a clip deleted sooner than that, email support@rinkreels.com and tell us which one. The same goes for your account and everything uploaded under it. A delete-it-now button in the app is something we intend to build; until it exists, the email is the way, and revoking is not a substitute for it.

Your rights and your data

Because your data is on your device, you are in direct control of it:

• To export it, use Settings → Download a backup. Note this exports your tags, notes, ratings and game info as a JSON file. It does not include your drawings or your walkthrough recordings — those live only on the device they were made on.
• To delete it, delete the app, or use the reset options in Settings.

If you have signed in or shared, we also hold the data listed under Signing in and sharing, and your team rosters. To reach it:

• Revoke a share link from the clip, which stops it opening for anyone who has it.
• Remove roster data by deleting the player from the roster, or deleting the team.
• For anything else — a copy of what we hold, a correction, deletion of your account, or deletion of clips you have uploaded — email us at the address below and we will action it.

If you are in the UK, EU, or a jurisdiction with similar law, you have rights to access, correct, and delete personal data we hold about you, and to ask us to stop processing it. If you have made a purchase and want the associated anonymous identifier removed, contact us and we will action that too.
